Abstract:

‘Society of Indian Record Collectors’ (SIRC) is a twenty-five years old Mumbai based organization engaged in the preservation of old gramophone discs. Over 2,000,000 old discs are still preserved by the private collectors along with catalogs, publicity material and photographs of the recording artists. Recently, SIRC members have initiated digitization work and obtained about 2000 hours of audio recordings and scan images of record labels and photographs. This presentation will describe strategies planned for deciphering information contained in this data and explore missing links. Such efforts would lead to novel methods of organizing large volume of digital data. This would help to obtain, organize and disseminate knowledge on audio cultures of India as represented in the gramophone record grooves.
